CONRAD, Joseph

Category: First Edition

Place/Publisher/Date:
London, Methuen & Co. 1914.

Description:

First edition, second issue; 8vo; original cloth boards. With the cancel leaf tipped in - Narcissus on the verso of the half title without the closing quotation marks, and eight page publishers catalogue dated Autumn 1913.Chance was Conrad's first commercial success after nearly 20 years as a writer. The novel is also unusual among its author's works for its focus on a female character: the heroine, Flora de Barral. It is characterised by a complex narrative in which different narrators take up the story at different points. Very good, wear to extremities and some scattered foxing.
