Autograph postcard from Sir William Matthews Flinders Petrie (1853-1942), English Egyptologist, written to 'Daniel W. Keith Esq, Hayes Common, Kent', in 1886. "I am very sorry to say that I cannot lay my hand on any copies of the paper in this Arch Cant. [Archaeologia Cantiana] on the Hayes pits etc. I may be able to find some possibly on my return from Egypt, for which I start tomorrow. Business has prevented my attending to anything else for some time past, or I would have replied sooner. I hope that some further digging may settle the age of the pits; but the absence of tobacco pipes (as I suppose) seems to show that they could hardly be so late as the 17th cent. Yours very truly, W M Flinders Petrie." His excavations in Egypt from laid the foundations for the study of ancient Egypt. Archaeological excavations at Hayes in Kent revealed pieces from the late-Neolithic period and the Bronze Age. A little toned and one corner creased.
