Thirty five pen and ink with water colour drawings by Patricia Bradley after "The Goblin Market" by Christina Rosetti

Description:

An artists cloth bound sketch book 11 by 14cm, with thirty five pen and ink with water colour drawings and hand written text after "The Goblin Market" by Christina Rossetti. The end piece states the work was "Written down and illustrated during the Christmas holidays 1934 by Patricia Bradley. Age 18." A note is pasted to the front pastedown "Mrs Roche with much love from Paddy." Goblin Market tells the story of Laura and Lizzie who are tempted with fruit by goblin merchants. In a letter to her publisher, Rossetti claimed that the poem, which is interpreted frequently as having features of remarkably sexual imagery, was not meant for children. However, in public Rossetti often stated that the poem was intended for children. In her first volume of poetry, Goblin Market and Other Poems, it was illustrated by her brother, the Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Whether intended for children or not the work obviously appealed to this 18 year old girl and she produced a beautifully illustrated volume. Fine - the original clasp of the book is broken.
