Martin Pippin in the Apple Orchard
Category: First Edition
London, W. Collins Sons & Co Ltd..
First edition; original cloth boards. Long inscription by the author to the front free end paper "Easter 1960 All we an know of Jo is that her name entitles her by its initial to be the first owner of this copy of Martin Pippin. But I wrote him for you Sally, twenty five years before we knew each other, so here he is for you who love him, whom I love and whose name I gave to Little Joan's child, from your Nellie. Eleanor Farjeon." There are three further inscriptions to the end papers by former owners including the one referring to Jo mentioned by Farjeon and one "Sally Thomas Her Book". Farjeon had a close friendship with the poet Edward Thomas and gave a definitive account of their relationship in Edward Thomas: The Last Four Years. It is possible that Sally Thomas was a descendent of the poet although I have not been able to confirm that. Loosely inserted is a two page typed note by Sara Jackson a close friend of Farjeon's detailing the lost moments of the author's life. Farjeon died holding Jackson's hand in the the presence of hear nephew Gervaise and a nurse. The note is inscribed in pen Rumer Godden (although not in that author' s hand). Pasted to the front paste down is a newspaper cutting written by Sara Jackson with her signature beneath. Very good spine a little faded and wear to the extremities and spine ends.
