Milan, Feltrinelli. 1959.
First trade edition in Russian, 8vo, original pale green boards, titles to spine and front board in black and dust jacket designed by Ampelio Tettamanti. It was impossible for Doctor Zhivago to be published in the Soviet Union and was first published in Italian by Feltrinelli in 1957. This edition was published in late April or early May 1959, and is preceded by a CIA-sponsored edition (September 1958) and the US edition, (January 1959). The book earned Pasternak the Nobel Prize for literature. but under pressure from the Soviet authorities, Pasternak was forced to reject it. A fine copy with some marginal toning, in a very good dust jacket, with short tears to the inner folds of the flaps. A fragile publication, difficult to find in this condition.
