Auction catalogue for the sale of part of The Belvoir Estate
His Grace the Duke of Rutland KG
Grantham, Escritt & Barrell Auctioneers. 1920.
Auction catalogue; small folio; original canvas backed covers; pp284; numerous black and white photographs. Details of 635 lots covering 13,300 acres of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, including "Fine Feeding and Dairy Farms, Valuable Cheese Producing Farms, Excellent Small Holdings, Very Desirable Sporting and Residential Properties, fully Licensed Inns, Accommodation Arable and Pasture Lands, Cottages, Cottage Holdings and Famous Fox Coverts." After the Great War Henry Manners 8th Duke of Rutland's vast debts finally caught up with him. He was forced to sell a large portion of the estate - a step he had resisted since succeeding to the dukedom in 1908. After the sale he was depressed , apparently haunted by guilt at being the first in a thousand-year-long line of custodians to break up the estate. Near fine some rubbing to the edges of the covers.
