The Cruel Sea
MONSARRAT, Nicholas

Category: First Edition

Place/Publisher/Date:
London, Cassell & Co.1951.

Description:

First edition, 8vo; original cloth boards. The Cruel Sea follows the lives of a group of Royal Navy sailors fighting the Battle of the Atlantic during the Second World War. The novel, based on the author's experience of serving in corvettes in the North Atlantic in the Second World War, gives a matter-of-fact but moving portrayal of ordinary men learning to fight and survive in a violent, exhausting battle against the elements and a ruthless enemy. The book was made into a film in 1953 starring Jack Hawkins, Donald Sinden, Denholm Elliott, Stanley Baker and, Virginia McKenna. The screenplay by Eric Ambler omits some of Monsarrat's grimmest moments. Included with this copy of the book are signed publicity photographs taken for film of Jack Hawkins and Donald Sinden. Very good, with a neat owners inscription to the front end paper, in a very good dust jacket with an area of loss to the top of the spine not affecting the lettering.
