POWYS, John Cowper
Category: First Edition
London John Lane, The Bodley Head. 1935.
First edition, 8vo; original cloth boards and dust jacket. Inscribed by the author on the front free end paper, 'For my old Friend Lawrence Pollinger From John Cowper Powys in celebration of the longest Intimate Association (except one man & one woman) I have ever had with anyone not a brother or sister in this country or in any other country.' There follows four lines in Greek which Powys states is here read in the context of Homer & Hesiod. He translates the Greek as ' "Come Muse, sing not to me of things that are, or that shall be, or that were of old, But think of another song..." So says my old friend Lawrence to me now. June 15 1959.' Lawrence Pollinger was Powys's literary agent and was agent to many important writers of the 20th Century including Graham Greene, H.E. Bates, Scott Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker, D H Lawrence and John Wyndham. Weymouth Sands is the title of the American first edition of this work, but prior to its publication in England, Powys and his English publishers were successfully sued for libel by Gerard Hodgkinson, who claimed that the character of Philip Crow in A Glastonbury Romance had been based on him. The damages awarded crippled Powys financially, and he was forced to make substantial changes to the British edition of Weymouth Sands. The title of the English version was changed to Jobber Skald and all references to the real-life Weymouth were cut. Weymouth Sands was eventually published in full in England in 1963. Spine slightly faded and a little wear to the extremities. The dust jacket is very good wear to the extremities and a chip to the spine. Preserved in a specially made slip case.
