Severn and Somme.
GURNEY Ivor

Category: First Edition

Place/Publisher/Date:
London Sidgwick and Jackson..

Description:

First edition; small 8vo; original red cloth. Inscribed by the author: "To Marion Scott, Dear Friend and Good Business Agent, Nov 6, 1917". Scott was the dedicatee of Gurney's later collection War's Embers and two poems in this volume also have his hand written dedication: "To Marion Scott". The author has added the place (and sometimes the date) of composition beneath a number of other poems. Gurney's relationship with Scott was the most significant of his life, Severn and Somme was published in October 1917, thanks to her efforts. One of only two works published in his lifetime, this work was inspired by Gurney's beloved Gloucestershire and his experiences on the Western Front in 1916, before he was gassed at Passchendale in August 1917. Very good, minor damp staining at outer margins and spine sunned.
