Place/Publisher/Date:
Lawford, Essex; Fox Ash Press. 2004.
Description: Limited edition; 4to; original boards. Edition of 300. David Jury, who established the Fox Ash Press in 1998, was engaged to photograph the entire contents of Spender's studio in 1997, and discovered in a draw, a large paper envelope with the words Moroccan Diary scrawled across it. It was found to contain a type written diary and the original hand written diary was also discovered. Jury found the diary to be a 'blunt, unreserved and compelling description of an alien world by a young, privileged, upper-middle class Englishman'. Spender had travelled to Morocco in the 1930s, he found his attempts to survive and assimilate what he was experiencing something of a challenge. Spender made the typed version on his return to England and includes edits and revisions as he had the idea of trying to get it published. In this book both versions of the texts have been arranged side by side to allow comparison. 80 pages 32 black and white photographs by Spender, tipped in. Fine.
