Scott's Last Expedition. In two volumes.

SCOTT, Robert Falcon

Category: First Edition, Travel

Place/Publisher/Date:
London, Smith & Co. 1913.

Description: First edition; 8vo; original ribbed dark blue cloth, upper covers and spines lettered in gilt, top edges gilt. Volume 1. Being the Journals of Captain R.F. Scott, R.N; C.V.O. Volume 2. Being the Reports of the Journeys & the Scientific Work Undertaken by Dr E. A. Wilson and the Surviving Members of the Expedition. Arranged by Leonard Huxley. With a preface by Sir Clements R. Markham. With photogravure frontispieces, 6 original sketches in photogravure by Wilson, 18 coloured plates (16 from drawings by Wilson), 260 full page and smaller illustrations, from photographs taken by Herbert Ponting, and other members of the expedition; panoramas and maps. This is undoubtedly the most widely known of all Antarctic expeditions and publications. Readers, having absorbed Scott's account of the expedition in the first volume, would have discovered in the second volume a host of first-hand accounts deserving of more weight today: Cherry-Garrard's account of the Winter Journey, Victor Campbell's narrative of the Northern Party, Griffith Taylor on the Western Journeys, Raymond Priestley on the ascent of Erebus, preliminary scientific reports from Edward Wilson's staff and throughout the unrivalled photography of Herbert Ponting. Fine, spine ends bumped, a little wear to the extremities, some very slight spotting to the edge of the text blocks and a small neat ownership stamp on the front free endpapers of both volumes. A lovely set not often found in this condition. Taurus 77.
