RUSSELL, Bertrand

Place/Publisher/Date:
Cambridge, University Press. 1903

Description: First edition; 8vo; original dark-blue polished cloth, gilt to spine. With the ownership inscription of A. D. Lindsay to the front free end paper. The Principles of Mathematics presents a view of the foundations of mathematics and has become a classic reference. In it he presented his famous paradox and argued his thesis that mathematics and logic are identical. Jules Vuillemin wrote in 1968 "The Principles inaugurated contemporary philosophy. Other works have won and lost the title. Such is not the case with this one. It is serious, and its wealth perseveres. Furthermore, in relation to it, in a deliberate fashion or not, it locates itself again today in the eyes of all those that believe that contemporary science has modified our representation of the universe and through this representation, our relation to ourselves and to others." Lindsay was professor of moral philosophy at Glasgow University before returning to Oxford University where he became Master of Balliol College. A socialist, Lindsay became a national figure in 1926 when he joined with William Temple in urging the government to seek a negotiated agreement to the General Strike. A socialist, he became an educational adviser to the Labour Party. Lindsay, was a strong opponent of appeasement, and stood as the anti-Munich candidate in the by-election that took place in Oxford in October, 1938. Although defeated by the Conservative Party candidate, Quintin Hogg. On the outbreak of the Second World War Lindsay became chairman of the Joint Recruiting Board, with the task of allocating conscientious objectors to work of national importance other than military service. Fine, corners bumped and a little wear to the extremities.
