ROSS, Henryk (Photographer); WEBER, Thomas (Text)

Category: History, Photography/Film, Second World War

Place/Publisher/Date:
London, Chris Boot. 2004.

Description: Photographs selected by Martin Parr and Timothy Prus. Foreword by Robert Jan van Pelt. Ross was a general press photographer in Lodz before the War. He was incarcerated in the ghetto where he became an official photographer, producing identity and propaganda photographs. He used the facilities he was given to create a record of the ghetto, risking his life to secretly document the deportations, hangings and other atrocities. As the Germans began the liquidation of the ghetto in 1944, he buried his archive. Surviving, he was able to recover his photographs, which he catalogued in 1987. He died in Israel in 1991. Fine in fine dust jacket.
