Letter signed to Charles Masterman, with reference to Churchill's reverence for the aristocracy.

LLOYD GEORGE, David

Category: Autograph Letters/Manuscripts, Signed

Place/Publisher/Date:
Treasury Chambers, Whitehall, London. 10 September 1913.

Description: Four pages, 8vo. 'I have an appointment with Winston to go through the Naval Estimates... he hates inflicting any hurt upon the aristocracy. The farmer he has no compassion for but he bleeds when you talk irreverently about rents and game... The drama of the situation appeals so much to him that for the moment he was prepared for human sacrifice'. Lloyd George and Churchill had been on friendly terms even before they sat together in the House of Commons: they enjoyed 'an entente of affinity and to some extent of interest' (Roy Jenkins. Churchill (2001) p232). Slightly dust-stained.
