A Voyage to Arcturus.
LINDSAY, David
Category: First Edition
Place/Publisher/Date:
London, Methuen & Co. Ltd. 1920.
Description: First edition; 8vo; original red cloth boards, lettered in blind on the covers and gilt on the spine; 8 page publisher's catalogue at rear. One of approximately 500 copies in the first issue binding. Lindsay's first book and masterpiece, which Colin Wilson in The Mind Parasites, argues is the greatest novel of the 20th Century. An extraordinary work must be counted one of the strangest and in some ways most powerful books of our time. A profound inquiry into the problem of evil. It was to have a significant impact on C.S. Lewis who recommended it to Tolkien. Although as Michael Moorcock states Lewis lacked Lindsay's " God-questioning genius, the very qualities which give this strange book its compelling, almost mesmerising influence." Very good with a blank ex-libris bookplate on the front pastedown, spine darkened, rubbed at the corners and spine ends and with one bumped corner. Scarce in any condition.
