Category: Illustrated
Place/Publisher/Date:
London, Jonathan Cape. 1935.
Description: First trade edition; royal 8vo; original brown buckram with gilt title and vignette. Inscribed on the front pastedown by Sir Ronald Storrs with an epitaph for Lawrence, "TE Lawrence/Even apart from his work/& without his book/a standard & a touchstone/for reality in life/Ronald Storrs/6 V 36". A fine association copy, inscribed a year after Lawrence's death by his close friend Sir Ronald Storrs, principal pallbearer at Lawrence's funeral and the man described in Seven Pillars as "the most brilliant Englishman in the Near East... Storrs was always first, and the great man among us". Loosely inserted in this copy are a prospectus for Lawrence's translation of The Odyssey, and an issue of T.E. Notes from January 1995 (volume 6, no. 1, page 11), where Denis McDonnell confirms that he has seen this copy and that the inscription is in Storr's hand. Fine a little wear to the extremities and a little spotting to the edge of the text block.
