Description: Limited edition; oblong quarto, original heavy coverstock boards with title stamped in black on cover, black cloth spine. Edition of 1000. Preface by Christopher Coppock and introductory essay by Derrick Price. Brief biography and bibliography. Coppock states that "If you were an alien landing on earth for the first time, you wouldn't have any difficulty deciphering Josef Koudelka's epic panoramic photographs. His visual language is simple, direct and generally uncluttered with cultural signs and symbols. The stark brooding pictures, exquisitely composed and meticulously considered, are not simply concerned with describing specific places, but talk equally about terrain: the actual substance of the earth, the physical presence of man-made structures, the interface between the land, the sea and the air. In this respect the images from South Wales that make up Reconnaissance, while having a remarkable sensibility towards a sense of place, do not subscribe to the conventional wisdoms of sublime landscape photography."
