KIPLING, Rudyard

Category: First Edition, Poetry

Place/Publisher/Date:
London, Methuen and Co. 1903.

Description: First limited edition; 8vo; original limp vellum, top edge gilt, gilt lettering to spine. Limited to 30 copies, printed on Japanese paper. Kipling became intensely involved in the war between Britain and the Boer republics which took place between 1899 and 1902, years during which a number of the poems in this collection were composed. He was unquestioning in his support of British policies in southern Africa. He was however critical of the generals and their wasting of young lives and he looks ahead to the threat of a new war which he saw would be even more terrible. Fine, the front board is very slightly bowed and one or two faint marks to the vellum. A lovely copy.
