KAVANAGH, Patrick
Category: Poetry, Second World War
Place/Publisher/Date:
Dublin, Cuala Press. 1942.
Description: Limited edition; 8vo; original linen-backed blue paper boards and glassine dust jacket, upper cover lettered in black, paper label on spine. Edition of 250, this is number 17. One of the great achievements of twentieth-century Irish literature. Clair Wills in her study of Ireland during the Second World War, states that the poem'excoriates the spiritual, sexual and emotional poverty of rural Ireland in the 1930s and 1940s. Kavanagh began the poem in 1941, while the Russian front was the main focus of the war. Wills believes that Kavanagh was drawing an analogy between the struggle of the Irish peasant and that of the Russian. Fine, with two spots to the edge of the text block in a good only jacket with loss to back panel. A nice copy of a scarce book.
