Description: Two volumes. Limited signed editions; tall 8vo; original quarter morocco over marbled boards, slipcases. Editions of 268 of which 250 were for sale. Both these are number 36. Each being one of 30 copies specially bound with a slip case. Signed by the artist. These two volumes of wood engravings illustrate Marie Hartley's complete output in this medium. They also mark the only occasion that printing of the wood engravings will be undertaken directly from the engraved blocks themselves, rather than printing plates. The engravings originally provided all the illustrations for three books about the Yorkshire Dales published in the 1930s. In the 1980's the original blocks were discovered to be still in existence, wrapped in newspaper and stored in an outhouse of Marie Hartley's home in Wensleydale. They picture life in the Dales at a time of change when the scenery, the people and their ways of life were still relatively undiscovered and unspoilt. A fine set.
