Description: Limited edition; 4to; original quarter cloth and marbled paper made by Louise Brockman, at the Fine Bindery in Wellinborough. Edition of 500 copies. Leslie Cole was born in Swindon in 1910, and was to become best known as an official artist of the Second World War - and one of the first Allies to witness the horror of Nazi death camps. He studied at the Royal College of Art, where his tutors included Bawden and Ravilious. He taught at Hull College of Arts and Crafts in 1937. During the early stages of the war, he produced a series of works showing factory work. He used examples of these factory scenes when he applied to the authorities to be a war artist, and he was eventually accepted as an official war artist. His first posting was to Malta, where he recorded the end of the siege of the island. He also covered the invasion of Italy, fighting in Greece, the defence of Gibraltar and the Normandy offensive following D-Day and he later visited Burma and Singapore. He was one of four official artists chosen to be present at the first liberation of a major concentration camp. His images from Bergen-Belsen are his most explicit and chilling. A superbly illustrated edition as usual from this source. Fine.
