Category: First Edition, Signed
Place/Publisher/Date:
London, Jonathan Cape. 1926.
Description: Foreward by Edward Garnett. First edition; 8vo; original cloth boards and dust jacket. Author's presentation copy, inscribed to dedication leaf: "With cordial wishes from H.E. Bates, April 28, 1930". The Two Sisters was the first novel published by Bates. The book was inspired by a midnight walk, which took him to the small village of Farndish in Bedfordshire. There, late at night, he saw a light burning in a cottage window and it was this that triggered the story. It was written when Bates was only 19 and working as a warehouse clerk. It was rejected by 9 publishers before being accepted by Jonathan Cape at the recommendation of Edward Garnett. Very good, top of the spine bumped, a little spotting to the edge of the text block a little offsetting to the end papers and a few pages are a little creased to the fore edge of the text block. The dust jacket is very good with an old small sellotape mark at head of spine.
